1) I used to work in a local bike shop. Mostly mountain bikes, but some racers and lots of kids bikes
2) Bought this for my step-son - good interim position for a tall and rapidly growing nine year old before moving to a small framed mountain bike.
The box arrival.

a) The box arrives. Looks as normal like you would have it shipped to a bike shop from a wholesaler, who basically get it in the same state that it arrives from the factory (usually from Taiwan/PRC as with 90% of all the bikes made on the planet by volume - even well known brands)
b) Opening the box - the same pathetic packing as you would expect from a cheap mass produced bike. To the extent of the same cheap thin cardboard rather than foam pipe covering the tubes. This is ok, as (luckily) my particular bike is unmarked. Noting others on here, and on the internet, many are not so lucky..

We still have it and he is 16 years old, looks good, rides good, sturdy durable and worth the cost.

Got the boy bike for one, and the girl bike for the other. Not much difference in the slope of the frame between the two models, and besides, one of them liked the idea of riding a boy's bike. Saved $100 over the big box store prices, plus free 2 day shipping with Amazon Prime!
I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but haven't put a bike together since I was a kid myself. I spent an hour and a half on the first one, and about 45 mins. on the second one. The girls helped as well. The bike came well packaged. Instructions weren't the greatest because they have one generic set of instructions for both youth and adult bikes and mix in different brake and shifter types.
Most of the bike is assembled right out of the box, but you have to do the following:
- Install the handlebars. One bolt for the stem, and 4 bolts for the handlebar itself. (gear shift cabling pre-attached)
