Good Bike Rack but know what you're buying into..., May 17, 2010 By Jacque Strapp (The Amazonia) - See all my reviews This review is from: Yakima Frontloader Bike Mount (Sports) I purchased this roof bike rack from a retailer, so the price on Amazon is about $20 less (each)... so you get a better deal on Amazon. I'm not a bike specialist and this is my first bike roof rack. I also had this rack installed onto the base rack onto my car by the retailer. The process took a little less than an hour.
I would have preferred a hitch rack installed on the rear of my car but I learned my car (MINI Clubman) is a bit difficult to install a hitch. You would have to take the rear bumper off and the two rear tire fenders... install the hitch and put everything back together. I wasn't in the mood to chance it since my car is new and installation of a hitch + bike rack and all its accessories would've got me in the $1,000 range. The hitch would've come in handy though. It's outstanding! There was no styrofoam at all, very little plastic, and only one small piece of tape to hold the box closed. The cardboard box is strong by how it is folded together.
The rack works great when you use it right. I used one for 2 weeks without any problems. For a tall rack it's difficult for one person, even with good strength. For my Subaru though, it's not bad to get it on without help. But here's the deal with loading it. Don't load it in the dark and rain before you've had your coffee! I put my bike with thin tires in at a slant and did not give it a good shake, and it came out going down the road. The strap on the back tire held it, and I have no bike damage but a small dent in my roof. I still recommend the rack. It is very easy to install and switch it from one vehicle to another. Just confirm that the front tire is centered, and give it a good hard shake before driving.
